Antidepressant-Induced Mania : Fact of Gross Exaggeration?

Abstract

|
Since the concern about the harmful effects of antidepressant, such as the induction of mania and of rapid cycling, was addressed, it has been accepted as a persuasive opinion that antidepressants should be used cautiously in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Along with the opinion, the opposite contention has also been continuously presented that antidepressants given in addition to a mood stabilizer are not associated with an increased risk of manic switch and rapid cycling, and furthermore such risks derived from studies with methodological limitations seem to be exaggerated. The present article is aimed to provide a balanced view of this debate by reviewing available evidences pertaining to the issue on antidepressant-induced mania.
